Don’t believe narratives about Trump and the “white working class.” The working class is 40% people of color (who overwhelmingly don’t like him) and Trump’s supporters are wealthier than most Americans (and wealthier than Bernie or Hillary supporters). This is about Trump and whites, period. To win, Trump needs 70% of white male votes — across class. And we can believe he’s winning by fooling naive people or we can deal with the possibility that he’s winning by telling his white base what they want to hear: racist attacks against Mexicans, Muslims, and non-whites. Euphemistically attributing the Trump phenomenon to the “white working class” to sidestep direct discussion of white grievances isn’t going to to help.
