Center for Popular Democracy

This Giving Tuesday, I’d like to encourage all of you to give to the organization I work for, the Center for Popular Democracy. At the Center for Popular Democracy our partners won every local fight we were a part of — Fair Scheduling in San Jose, a higher minimum wage and getting rid of Arpaio in Arizona, a higher minimum wage in Colorado, and more. If we want to change across the country, it’s going to have to happen from the grassroots level, with rooted, proven, effective community organizations like those in CPD’s network, building and winning change at the local level. We are a network of 43 different community-based partners all across the country who are all doing the amazing work of changing their communities and building a movement that will change what is possible in 2018 and 2020. Please contribute!

Why I’m Getting Arrested During Today’s National Day of Disruption

Today Fight for $15 is conducting a major disruption along with airport workers from 20 different cities. The workers, mostly people of color and women, who lead the movement have won a raise for 22 million Americans since it started.

As we enter a period when unions will be under attack, our economy will be reorganized for the personal benefit of our president and his cronies, and every protection working people have will be threatened, it is movements, and the working people behind the movements, like the Fight for $15 that can still make progress at the local level and provide us with hope.

How to Give, and to Give Thanks, to Standing Rock

From Leo Gurtnur: Today I’m most grateful for the people who haven’t shied away for a second from our duties and responsibilities as people of conscience, especially those at Standing Rock, but everywhere else, in the face of this full-scale assault on our and our friends’ humanity. Thank you for giving me the hope I need to keep going and inspiring me to work harder and give more of myself.

Rachel Paneth-Pollak and I just gave money to the Standing Rock Medic and Healer Council today. There’s lots of other ways to support these brave resisters. Let’s all rest up for the fight.
